Also, the street vendors with fruit, with their backs to us - fantastic image!Casey Klahnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08020906666248399435noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6433515488823955689.post-2546256069847494782012-04-25T13:43:37.623-07:002012-04-25T13:43:37.623-07:00Great idea locking in the shadows early. The sun kept coming and going while we were out there and yet I did manage to keep it consistent.

I usually paint fast. I got much faster at painting after doing a series of two to five minute gesture drawings. It eliminates a lot of the hesitation. That and learning to block in first, detail later. It took me years to get used to that though, many beginners and intermediates do what I did and use details for relative measurement. That can work for slow drawing from a photo but it won't work for changing light outdoors.

Another tip - if I'm moving elements around in the scene, it helps to jot an arrow with the direction of the sun outside my painting area. This works best if I remembered to mark a painting area on the paper and have some margins, but even if it's just a piece of masking tape with an arrow drawn on it to stick to the drawing board it'd do the same thing. That way the cast shadow of a moved form or invented form can go in the right direction.robertsloan2arthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02598847116529877475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6433515488823955689.post-73330711016530069382012-04-23T12:26:05.942-07:002012-04-23T12:26:05.942-07:00Lovely art and a great post. It's the patterns of sun and shadow that change before you, the remainder of the scene stays put.Susan Rouxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01811139850899265798noreply@blogger.com
